

I was really excited when my kindergartner, Mark, asked me to make a zombie hat for him. I asked him to draw a picture of how he wanted it to look. We agreed that it needed to have a hanging eyeball and an exposed brain. He was super happy with how it turned out. I hope you like it as much as he does!

Braids

Cut five 30” strands of the green, white & black (total= 15 strands). Holding all of the strands, fold in half and pass the folded loop through the bottom of the ear flap (use hook to help). Pass the strand ends through the loop and pull tight to form a knot (now you have 30 strands). Divide the strands into three sections (10 strands in each) and braid. Repeat for 2nd braid.


Eyeballs
Crochet hook: H 5 mm
Yarn: make one in white and one in black
Rnd 1: magic ring, 9 dc, join [9]
Rnd 2: ch 2, make 2 dc in each st, join, fasten off & leave a long tail for sewing on [18]
Sew eye and eye socket onto front of hat. Make sure they are centered between the earflaps.
Pupil
Crochet hook: H 5 mm
Yarn: black
Rnd 1: magic ring, 4 sc, join [4]
Switch to blue yarn.
Rnd 2: ch 1, make 2 sc in each st, join and fasten off & leave a long tail for sewing on [8]
Sew pupil onto white eyeball and use red yarn to add veins.


Hanging Eyeball

Crochet hook: 4.5 mm
Yarn: black
Instructions between two asterisks should be repeated for the remainder of the round.
Rnd 1: magic ring, 3 sc, join [3]
Switch to blue yarn.
Rnd 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each st, join [6]
Switch to white yarn.
Rnd 3: ch 1, *2 sc, sc in 1 st*, join [9]
Rnd 4: ch 1, *2 sc, sc in 2 sts*, join [12]
Rnds 5-7: ch 1, sc in each st, join [12]
Rnd 8: ch 1, *sc2tog, sc in 2 sts*, join [9]
Begin stuffing with poly fil & use your red yarn to add the veins.
Rnd 9: ch 1, *sc2tog, sc in 1 st, join [6]
Rnd 10: ch 1, *sc2tog*, [3]
Rnd 11: ch 1, sc2tog, join and fasten off- close last st with your yarn tail.
Tie a piece of red yarn to the eyeball and attach the other end to the middle of the black eye socket.
Use your tapestry needle to add red yarn to the bottom of the eye socket so it looks like blood is coming out.

Mouth
Use your tapestry to attach a piece of black yarn straight across 11 stitches. Make sure it is centered under the eyes.
Add red yarn to the bottom of the mouth line so it looks like blood is coming out.

Brain
Crochet hook: H 5 mm
Yarn: light pink
Sizes 0/3 months- 6/12 months: Chain 46 and sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and each rem ch, fasten off [45]- make 3 of these
Sizes Toddler- Adult: Chain 50 and sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and each rem ch, fasten off [49]- make 3 of these
Two of the pieces are for the front of the brain. The 3rd piece is for the back half.
Attach your front pieces back and forth, one on either side of the front of the brain. Be sure to leave a little space between so that the left and right sections are more defined. The third piece should loosely fill the back half.
Use gray yarn to make a dotted line in each squiggle. Use red yarn to outline the bottom of the brain and in between the squiggles.
